This weekend, the Baltimore Museum of Art is holding its 2010 Print Fair, and I'm going to have a table there on Saturday from 11AM-5PM at the "DIY Marketplace." There are 5 canvas' prepped, only 3 solidified painting/composition ideas. One painting has an under painting on it, though I was really hoping to get all three of the ideas sketched out on canvas' today; I forgot how time consuming painting is and how much energy it sucks up, I'm tired!

Catching Up

It has just been a whirlwind of a month, I need to get my barrings.

May started off with finals which was well summed up here, posted on.

Then came the big thesis show, which I adore but first I was held in Maryland for an extra four days too long. It was a great night with a great space, and the catalogue looks amazingly well designed and professional.

Of course, graduation- I'm a master BABY!

This past week I went to a charity benefit in Grandpa's honor up in CT. I love my family, I think grandma gets funnier every time I see her. (happy b-day grandma)

Then off to New York for a 3 day fun fest with buddies, the clip I'm providing illustrates a more pensive moment watching ... The Peanut Butter Solution. There are no words to describe that movie.

This week is full of cleaning out the studio, it's terribly cathartic and melancholy. Then to a wedding this weekend, my goodness. Goodbye May!

Grandpa's Book

I've been working on this book - the back story is already written in it.

Thing is, I made this book Easter '07 for my Grandpa, and he loved it, he wouldn't let it go. It was a poorly constructed book that was sorta messy and cheap looking made of print outs.. so I always wanted to re-do it for him. This past winter around Thanksgiving he had a stroke and died shortly after and I wish I could've gotten it finished for him before then. This book really attempts to emphasize his humor, and illustrate what a fun, amazing person he was, and don't let my sadness of his loss in this introduction disrupt that.
the embossed phrases on the bottom are the things I miss most, but I don't think the scanner picked them up, I'll write them below the photos

This is the cover, it's a Charleston Chew bar and an ice cube cause he always had them in the freezer. Whenever we wanted a snack we knew where to go, but they were definitely more for him than the kids. The day of the funeral I saw a half eaten pack in the fridge.

I need to finish Tia, and one of the paintings of me as a kid, the two of me as a kid are together .. a .. weird diptych, pitting together characaturist portrayals of me as a fatty and me as a cutie lol. I'm posting my progress.

Getting a little less imaginative with my titles.

I'm so very close to being finished. All of the pages in the book are screen printed except I have to re-print a page due to a typo - my bad, so .. i'll fix that tomorrow. Either way, I'm totally excited for the book. The cover is finished printed as well. Tomorrow when I fix the one page, I'm going to use letterpress to make raised print, there's no ink, just an impression of the sentence in the paper.
I'd show images of the book, but I'd rather wait till they are done, for now I'm posting up the glamorous set up that is the print lab. It has it's own charm I've grown to like it down there.

the tia .. iss ... ok. it's coming along, not as fast or as well as I'd like .. but should be finished when i want it to be.

I've printed 75% of the book's pages today, should be able to finish it tomorrow, provided the rest of the paper arrives. sweeeet.

I haven't touched the other 2 paintings, which is ridiculous, but as fast as the book is going I could squeeze them in with an all nighter or two before crits.

On a lighter note I did get my clothes in the mail today :D I'll put up a picture of my fav item (alright, two) of the bunch - cause yeah, I'm ridiculously girly. so? what? thought not.

Intentions

Right now, I'm sat at my desk writing my artist statement... I've lost count of how many time's I've re-written it. To take a bit of a break from that I'm listing my intentions of what is to come over the next week and a half - two weeks:

- I'm finishing that darn painting of Tia - I'm going to get that thing finished!!!

- I have two paintings in mind (I'll let the subject be a surprise) that are going to be finished relatively quickly in a de kooning inspired feel. But obviously, my own painting style.

- A 16 page book, 8 editions.

BTW, that Do You Wanna Dance was an edition of 30, with 15 to spare.

I'll also be posting the glorious spectacle that is final crits. FOR REAL FINAL CRITS. after that it's over, and onto my next big adventure, one better than An American Tail; somewhere out there.

Get Ready to Read!

This entire series (entire post) is titled "American Women Hate American Women". It's a collection of quotes from American women criticizing other American women through sexist undercutting of substance. I felt really disgusted with these women saying the quotes because they're cannibalizing their own civil rights progress.

I made at least twelve prints for each quote, six at 8.5" x 16.5" and three at 8.5"x 4" (i think)

Above is the infamous "caribou barbie" label that Palin got stuck with. She should've been attacked on being unqualified or a number of substantial arguments - not on her looks. Anyway, this is glitter print, but a lot of it's flaking off already.

This is a look at the prints all together for each quote.

The screen didn't burn all that properly, it says "Like Hillary [Clinton] she [Michelle Obama] lacks taste; her consumer preferences seem to have been rendered into being by the Mall."

Oh man, this one's a doosey. There were t-shirts made last semester when Palin first popped onto the political radar; they had this slogan "Puck Fucker" on them and was made by a girl. She's a real nice, smart, creative girl but I couldn't believe she made this not realizing what it is REALLY saying.

"Daily Beast" quote commenting on Michelle Obama's shocking display of arm.

Another floor group (cause there were too many variations) on a book review of a woman author by a woman critic. "Being regarded as neither popular nor hot seems to be territory Ms. Gershow knows well." Also, the screen burned poorly, so "hot" isn't very clear.

The one on the top is just playing around with the lil Steve image. The bottom image is 26 pulls of Steven on one piece of paper which is way messier than it sounds. A bucket of green splash across my face and torso, I was stained for the entire day. That's besides the point! I liked how the more of an image was applied the less could be seen and identified literally but the more could be read into it.

Ooo, these are a complicated duo (to explain).

Above is Dwight.. a few times. On the panel is a sanded down painting of the photo printed on top of it, I wanted to give a ghost image to build up on, but it's unrecognizable now except for the remains of it which tone the piece now. On top of that is the printed photo that I made into a transparent wax paper through boiling water with wax powder, waxed it on and ironed it. After waxing it, it started to fall apart a bit so I took advantage and started to re-arrange the features so part of the mouth is the eye and part of the head is the chin, I could reconfigure it because all I had to do is wax it like a puzzle! Then on top of that, which is the part I went too far on is more wax paper that isn't thoroughly translucent. The problem I'm concerned with is that the imagery is getting broken down too far, I originally wanted to deconstruct things but now I want to build on the imagery to make what I care about grow v. depleted.

This was another transferred image that obviously did not transfer very well. I'll keep it though. I like the idea that regardless of the effort not everything can be easily read, and moved, or altered in a way you always expect it to be.

These are pieces of a large print out that is about 28" x 32". I transferred these from the large photo, taking information that looked complete on its own. I like how these turned into watery, delicate transfers - omitting unnecessary information that would've weighed it down. It feels essential and uncomplicated this way. The phrases I wrote beneath each photo will be hand written on the bottom of each which will punctuate the pieces and help them be less obtuse.

Mona & Muffin

This sketch was made about 15 minutes after I was lucky enough to meet Mona and Muffin.
I drove to Sue's apartment for the first time without Jordan behind the wheel. Although I arrived safely, parking remained an issue. One way streets and miscellaneous spaces of concrete marked "handicap parking only" were making my night interminable, but I finally hunted down 6 feet of concrete of my own.

Out of my car window I noticed a pregnant woman standing on her stoop across the street, with her stomach exposed, I didn't think much of it, got out of my car, walked one way ... not sure if i was closer or further from Sue's place. I start walking the other way. A man's voice calls to me to see if i needed help finding my way, I turn around and the person who I thought was pregnant just had a hard, out turned, egg shell of a stomach staring at me, a towering figure at around 5'10". To this day I have no clue if this person was a real female, or a female impersonator, either way, a real sweetheart.

In the mission of trying to find which direction Sue's place is, she yells to her friend from outside to the inside of their second story window - down comes a very petite girl, with huge (very pretty) curly hair, and a very big personality - she introduces herself as Mona, and then introduces her friend who i met first as Muffin. They talk about how dangerous it is in the area, especially the 6 grown men loitering on the corner at 7th street. They insist on walking me past there, at the least. Their bickering is pretty funny the whole way, I do very little talking, it's mostly Mona yelling about Muffin not knowing where "the fuck" she's going. It was still pretty sweet, my entirely unexpected guardian angels.

This is a painting of Dwight on panel, about 28"x28". It's from a photo of him looking down at a baby in his arms, but I wanted to pin point the way he was gazing in this piece. It was originally painted in order to get screen printed on - I'm not convinced about the shape of the panel though, how to add screen prints on a shape like that .. or what I could add to make the image grow into more information about why that particular moment is of note. maybe .. i could ... screen print information about the setting/context of the photo .. or ch ch ch, use screen print as a collage form to build another piece of info. we'll see.

I didn't realize how much of a break I took from posting. How embarrassing!

This is Peggy 1962.
It is a painting from a reference photo, with the reference photo printed on top of the painting and then painted on again from the reference photo with some liberties. I tried to build up the idea of her as a kid, woven with the literal form. I've heard that some people read it as an erased image- I meant it to be the absolute opposite (unfortunately), because it has been built up, more and more, trying to make sense of a near obliterated photograph. It isn't trying to capture who Peggy actually was; the painting is presenting a new personification of the photograph infusing (misguided) nostalgia, with my idea of her as a kid, with my idea of her now. I say misguided nostalgia .. because i think nostalgia in general is misleading, it makes you think you know a certain time and place, but it's just the idealized idea of these memories and especially for generations that didn't exist at the time... like me.
Not to get didactic or anything, but I found some great quotes on nostalgia:
"The poignancy of nostalgia is, paradoxically, rendered the greater by the revelation that their familial memories are artificially created."

It's almost as though I've based my entire semester on that quote before ever reading it. Ahhh, but oh well!
